Where the questions come from

These are the 111 questions we run every day, on ChatGPT, Gemini and Google AI Overviews, for William Mattar Law Offices, a motor vehicle accident firm in New York. They were built from the firm’s intake calls, from the searches that already reached its site, and from the follow-up questions the engines themselves suggest. They are the questions a person actually types in the days after a crash, in their own words, not the keywords a marketer would pick.

Grouped by what the person is trying to do, they split into five kinds: 51 ask the engine to find or recommend a lawyer, 26 ask how a claim works in New York, 10 ask whether hiring a lawyer is worth it and what it costs, 8 ask the engine to compare firms, and 16 name one specific firm and ask about it. The last group is the firm’s own brand questions and is not listed here. Questions marked high volume are the ones the engines see most often.

Two things stand out before the list. The engines are asked to choose a lawyer far more often than they are asked to explain the law, and a large share of the choosing questions carry a city: Buffalo, Rochester, Syracuse, Albany, Long Island, New York City. A firm that is not named for its own city in these answers is not in the running.

How the claim works, is it worth it, and compare firms: 44 questions

These questions come before the decision to call anyone. The engines answer them mostly from government and court sources (ny.gov, nycourts.gov, nysenate.gov) and from the handful of law firm pages that explain the rules plainly. A firm whose site answers these questions in plain language gets retrieved alongside the official sources, and that is often the first time the engine learns the firm’s name.

Is it worth hiring a lawyer, and what does it cost

These are the questions that decide whether a claim becomes a case. They are also where fee models, free consultations and specialisation get repeated by the engines, so the facts on the firm’s site and its directory listings have to agree.

Compare firms and track records

Fewer people ask these, but they are the questions closest to the decision. The engines answer them from directory profiles, review counts and whatever results a firm has published that can be verified.

How to use the list, and sources

Run your own set. Take the questions above, swap in your state and your cities, and ask each of ChatGPT, Gemini and Google AI Overviews from a logged-out browser. Record three things per answer: whether you are named, which firms are named ahead of you, and which pages the engine cites. After a week you will know which stage of the journey you are losing. In the data behind this list, William Mattar is named in 37.8% of decision-stage answers but only 6.3% of comparison-stage answers, which told us exactly where to work.

Then fix the sources, not the answers. The engines build the shortlist from the firm’s own site, from Avvo, Justia, Super Lawyers and Expertise, from YouTube and social profiles, and from the official sources on New York law. The companion piece, who AI engines trust when someone asks for a car accident lawyer in New York, shows which of those sources each engine leans on. SourceNode runs this daily for firms: we read the answers, correct and publish the sources, and match the visits that follow to signed cases. How an engagement runs for a firm is on our law firms page, the documented result is on the results page, and a call shows what the engines say about your firm today.
