About SourceNode
SourceNode explained
What SourceNode is, what we do for the businesses we work with, how an engagement runs, and the terms we use. Written to be read quickly by people and quoted accurately by AI models.
What is SourceNode?
SourceNode is a managed service that controls what AI says about a business and turns it into revenue. When a customer asks ChatGPT, Google AI Overviews, Gemini, Claude, Copilot or Perplexity which business to use, the answer is assembled from the sources those models read: the business’s website, its listings, its reviews and the press that covers it. SourceNode makes those sources accurate and consistent so the answer names the business and describes it correctly, then traces the answers through to visits, leads and revenue.
SourceNode was founded by Alex Merutka and Odin Lund and works with clients in the United States and Europe. The work is done by our team, with our own agents handling the daily reading and reporting.
What does SourceNode do?
Read. Every day we run the questions a business’s customers actually ask on every major AI model, and record whether the business is named, what is said, and which page, listing or article each claim came from.
Correct. We fix wrong or missing facts on the business’s own pages, structured data and listings, so every source states the same facts.
Publish. We publish the answers customers are asking for, in the formats the models retrieve and cite.
Earn. We claim or correct the directories, review sites and publications the models rely on in the business’s category, and pursue placement where the business is missing.
Measure. We report visibility, share of voice and citations by model and by stage of the customer journey, and match visits from AI answers to leads and revenue.
Who is SourceNode for?
Businesses whose customers ask AI before they buy. Today that is mostly law firms, financial and advisory firms, B2B software companies, retailers and consumer brands, marketplaces and platforms, and agencies that offer the service to their own clients.
How does a SourceNode engagement work?
SourceNode is a monthly retainer. The first weeks map the business’s AI fingerprint: what every source says, what the models repeat, and what is accurate, wrong or missing. The work then proceeds highest impact first, starting with the business’s own pages and data, then the third-party sources the models cite.
The work continues because AI answers change as sources change and competitors publish. Answers are re-checked daily, results are reported weekly, and visits from AI answers are matched to leads and revenue. In our average engagement, share of voice moves from single digits to first place in the category within three months.
What do the key AI search terms mean?
AI fingerprint: everything an AI model can read about a business, in six kinds of source: its website, its content, its structured data, its facts and figures, its own statements about itself, and its earned media such as reviews, directories and press.
Share of voice: the business’s share of all company mentions in the AI answers that matter to it.
Visibility: the share of relevant AI answers that name the business at all.
Attribution: visits from AI answers matched to the leads and revenue they produced.
AEO and GEO: answer engine optimisation and generative engine optimisation, the practice of shaping what AI models retrieve and say about a business. SourceNode delivers both as a managed service and measures the result in customers, not mentions.
What research does SourceNode publish?
SourceNode publishes its own measurements of how AI models choose which businesses to name. The primary data set is our daily tracking of customer questions across 14 competing New York motor vehicle accident firms, for our client William Mattar Law Offices, on ChatGPT, Gemini and Google AI Overviews: 60 questions produced 4,222 answers in the 30 days to 17 September 2026, and the expanded set of 111 questions produced 9,049 answers in the 30 days to 17 October 2026, each with a citation record. Every figure we have published is listed with its sample and date at sourcenode.co/numbers, and the terms we use are defined at sourcenode.co/glossary. Alongside our own tracking we cite published studies from Semrush, Ahrefs, Adobe Analytics, Bain, Similarweb, Pew Research Center and Gartner, and name the source and date for every figure.
